Cracked Up
Artist Statement
Artist: Charlexia Witcher
For this project, I named my artwork “Cracked Up” because in each art piece the paint started to crack which allowed my artwork to have texture. I wanted my art pieces to look like shapes just randomly put together and different colors vary with each layer I added. I also wanted the tape resist technique to show through my artwork. My artwork was done by the use of Tempera Paint which was hard at times because when I would go from one layer to the next, the paint would start to smear and get messy. When this happened, It was hard for me to make my shapes look exactly how I wanted them to. I used the tape resist technique so that I could apply more colors without them blending with one another. I also used this technique to give each art piece a pattern that could be seen when looking at all three art pieces together. My artwork expresses the idea that good artwork doesn’t always have to be planned or structured to look good and have a meaning that others can relate to. I believe that my artwork shows that being able to create an art piece unpredictably and so freely can be as good as an art piece that was planned. My goals for this project was to be able to experience painting my own piece that I have never done and be able to create something new and unique that I haven’t seen done in my class. I learned a lot about paint and how to properly use it and the different techniques that can be applied to your artwork when using paint. I think I did a great job.
